AN TRAN, Pharm.D.
An Tran is a Clinical Pharmacist in Medical Specialty Utilization Management Development for CVS Caremark. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. While in school, he worked as a Pharmacist Intern at HEB Pharmacy, a local grocery chain, for two years. He became interested in managed care and non-traditional pharmacist roles through his participation in the Pharmacy & Therapeutic (P&T) Competition as a student member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and through his APPE rotations at Houston-based HMO KelseyCare Advantage and health plan Humana. Following his graduation, An pursued a PGY1 Managed Care Residency under CVS Caremark in Dallas, TX. During this residency, he completed various focused and longitudinal rotations to gain an understanding of a pharmacist's role in the Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) environment. He also gained experience in understanding medication usage on a macro level, developing the formulary management process and strategies used to drive formulary utilization, designing prescription benefit and presentations customized to client needs, analyzing claims data for costs and utilization, and performing outcome analysis to identify areas of improvement based on client performance. Some of the projects An has been working on during his residency include developing and reviewing Utilization Management strategies for template and Medicaid clients, presenting RxInsights to clients, and developing monographs for clients' P&T, among others. Aside from managed care, An is passionate about community engagement. He got involved with VAPhA through the Vietnamese-American Pharmacy Student Society (VAPSS) organization at the University of Houston. After attending several health fairs, An realized the importance of community outreach in promoting public health and healthcare literacy. As an immigrant himself, he understands the challenges faced by the local Vietnamese community in accessing healthcare services and hopes to continue being involved with the community in the future.
